ASK THE WAXTHETICIAN™: Am I supposed to tip?

Ask the Waxthetician is an ongoing series of questions that our customers ask.  If our fabulous customers are pondering these questions, maybe you are too.

What is a Waxthetician? Well, we made that word up because it sounds awesome and we like it :-)  To us: a Waxthetician is an esthetician who specializes in waxing.

While tipping is appreciated, it is not required! Waxtheticians are employees in the service industry just like stylists, servers and bartenders.  Although some Waxtheticians earn an hourly salary, some only earn a commission.  Generally speaking, the majority of customers tip 10% - 20% per service. Tips are based on cost of service, length of service and most importantly, how well the services are performed.

ASK THE WAXTHETICIAN™: What exactly is a Brazilian wax and what does the process entail?

After you have found a Waxthetician that you feel comfortable booking your appointment with for your Brazilian, here's what to expect!

When you arrive at the salon, you will be given a consent and a brief health screen form.  Once you complete the necessary paperwork, you will be greeted by your Waxthetician at which point he/she will show you to your room. He/she will instruct you to remove everything from the waist down.  You will be given a cleansing wipe if you need to wipe off, and a drape to cover you (disposable thongs are available for those who are uber discrete). The Waxthetician will step out to allow you privacy while you remove your clothing.  They will return when you let them know they are ready.  Upon returning the Waxthetician will sanitize their hands and apply gloves and check to make sure your hair is the appropriate length for waxing (1/4" if finer hair and 1/2" for coarse hair).  If your hair length is OK, you will be asked if you want to leave any hair (some people get a landing strip which is a line down middle, triangle, or other shape), the area will be cleansed, skin protectant will be applied to protect the skin and the waxing process will begin.

The Brazilian process consists of removing all hairs from the front to back including the anus. A thin layer of warm wax is applied with a disposable stick, in the direction of hair growth. A paper or cloth strip is applied; then pulled at a 40 degree angle to pull hair from its roots. Hard wax can also be used in which case it will be applied onto a section in a circular motion or figure 8, leaving a tab to pull. Once the wax dries it is pulled at the same angle as soft wax, and repeated until all hair is removed.  If residue wax is left, it is cleaned with a remover. The client will be given a warm towel to wipe off, and post care instructions to maintain your "fabulous Brazilian"!

Many people wonder exactly what a Brazilian wax is. They aren't sure exactly how the hair is taken off, if they have to have everything removed, if there are areas that are left behind, or how far to the back or sides it may go. It can definitely vary from person to person and based on what they prefer or are comfortable with.  Today we are going to talk about what a typical Brazilian wax entails. First, we will start off with the client lying flat on their back so that we can remove the hair in the area up front, between the hip bones and down to the top of the lip area. Some people will ask to leave a strip or a triangle, and some wish to have everything taken off. We do whatever the client prefers and tailor the experience to suit their personal needs. After that, your waxthetician will ask you to pull your knees up to your chest and hold them there, all while still laying on your back. This is so that we are able to get a clear view of the buttock area and have the skin there pulled tight in order to properly, and as painlessly as we can, remove the hair.  Everything between the cheeks and up to the lip area will be removed.  Contrary to what you may believe, this part is probably the most painless area to be waxed!! Once we are done with the backside, we will move on to the area in the middle. You will be asked to put your legs back down and lie flat on your back again, and point either one or both of your legs out to the side (like butterfly wings). This is when we will remove all of the hair from your upper thigh area a few inches down from the crease where your leg and genital area meet, and the lip area. This area tends to make people the most nervous, but it is really much easier than what you might think. After all of this area is done, and all of the hair has been completely removed, your Brazilian wax is finished!! All in all, a Brazilian wax is quick and relatively easy!  You will definitely love the results and be happy you made the decision to get it done. I recommend that everyone try a Brazilian at least once in their lifetime, even if it is just for the sake of trying something new. I promise that when you are hair free for up to 4 weeks and you don't have to worry about bumps and itchiness you will never want to go back to shaving again!!

ASK THE WAXTHETICIAN™: Do men really get waxed?

Ask the Waxthetician is an ongoing series of questions that our customers ask.  If our fabulous customers are pondering these questions, maybe you are too.

LASHAYE: WAXTHETICIAN™

Men get waxed a lot more often than you may think.  Many men do it simply for a more cleaner look. Some do it to prevent chafing, odors or that uncomfortable feeling of their pubic hair getting stuck in their underwear.  There have also been complaints of hair getting stuck in toilet paper as they wipe.  You’d also be surprised at how many men get waxed to please their partners.  Waxing has been rumored to afford for a more enjoyable sexual experience.  If you’re waxed, there is no need for their partner to stop to spit out stray hairs. :-)  Occupation and athletics are also other reasons that drive men to waxing; truck drivers, mailmen, construction workers, IT guys, cyclist, bodybuilders, martial artists, yogis, swimmers, professional football, basketball, and baseball players . . . you name it - they all get waxed!  Another thing about men that get waxed is, they tend to be very close-lipped about it.  It’s not a water cooler topic for them!  They are extremely selective in who they will allow to wax them and where they go to receive their services.  As a result, they tend to be our most loyal clients.  At Waxuality we offer a cozy, discrete environment that caters to a diverse clientele.  Men LOVE it here!

MELISSA: WAXTHETICIAN™

A question that I am asked a lot is, "Do men really get waxing services??" The answer to that is, YES!! It's catching on, and men actually get waxed more often than you'd think.  Men have really started to care about their appearance and started to groom themselves much better lately.  Not just gay men, as it is often “assumed”, groom.  One’s desire to groom themselves is irrespective of sexual preference or gender identity. Men have begun to worry about how hairy their backs or chests are a lot more.   Shaving causes them the same problems that it causes women: ingrown hairs, bumps, itchy and uncomfortable skin.  As a more desirable alternative, they have started waxing so that they can have that touchable, smooth, hair-free skin, without the icky looking bumps and discomfort of using a razor.  Another service that is growing much more popular among men is the Brazilian wax. Guys are realizing the benefits of not having hair in that region.  It's not as hot down there without hair, which means less sweating and less odor.  It's not just them, but also their significant others, that are finding it much more attractive not to have all of that hair in the way of everything. I think that more men are thinking that there's got to be a reason why so many women come in for the Brazilian, so they want to try it out and see for themselves just how wonderful it can be!!  So the next time that the man in your life is complaining about having problems with shaving, or you are just tired of seeing him hairy, make him an appointment for a wax!! He will thank you for it!!

ASK THE WAXTHETICIAN™: How do I prepare for a wax and what do I do to take care of it?

Pre:

Let hair grow

Hair should be a 1/4" long, if hair is fine. Coarse hair should be 1/2" long.  Essentially, this means that you should let your hair grow at least 2 weeks prior to waxing.

For face waxing

You should stop using retinol products 2 -4 weeks beforehand, accutane at least one year beforehand, and antibiotics about a week beforehand.

Nervous clients

Take the pain reliever of your choice (no aspirin - it makes you prone to bleeding) 30-45 minutes before service; if you feel it may be too painful.  While in the midst of your service if you still experience pain, ask your waxthetician to wax in smaller sections.

Prior Plans

Don't plan anything physical right afterwards.  Allow 24 hours for sex or fitness activities that will cause you to excessively sweat in the waxed area.

Post:

Clothing

Don't wear tight clothing or panties for at least 24 - 48 hours. This prevents chafing, ingrown hairs, and other irritations.

Precautions

  • Avoid putting hands on freshly waxed skin; this can cause irritation

  • Don’t take excessively hot showers

  • Begin to exfoliate 48 hrs after service

  • Sexual activity should be avoided for  at least 24-48 hrs

  • Avoid pool or beach for 24 hrs

  • Limit sun exposure for 24 - 48 hrs

  • Moisturize skin daily after treatment with ingredients such as lavender, tea tree, and witch hazel creams because follicles are open and prone to infection.

Two questions that I've heard quite a bit since I’ve started my job as an esthetician are how do I prepare for a wax and how do I take care of my skin afterwards. Both of these questions are very important.  Some people are surprised to find out that there are things you should do to prepare for a wax and don't understand why they should have to prepare their skin to have hair removed from it.  Preparing your skin for waxing, especially in larger areas, is extremely important in order to keep it from having problems during, or after your waxing service.  You should always cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize the day before you get waxed.

  • Keeping the area clean is also important because you don't want any dirt, oils, or bacteria getting into your open pores.  After the hair is pulled out of the pore it is like having an open sore and can easily get infected and irritated if not clean and properly cared for.

  • The reason for exfoliating is to make sure that you don't have the layer of dead skin in the way of completely removing the hair.  This important step prevents your esthetician from having to go over the area more than once, which can lead to irritation and a longer recovery time.

  • Moisturizing helps to make your skin more resilient and healthy.  It will help to ensure that the area being waxed tolerates the service better and recovers more quickly afterwards.  Dry and/or damaged skin can possibly tear and peel, which can be very uncomfortable and can take much longer to heal and get back to its pre-waxed state.

Remember these three steps before every wax, and you should have a good experience after every service.

Now to talk about how to care for your skin after your service.  After your hair is removed, your skin has been exfoliated with the waxing, and again, your pores are open and susceptible to infection if not taken care of properly.  For 24 hours after waxing, you shouldn't do any activities that will make you sweat excessively, such as exercising.  After 48 hours you should start exfoliating and moisturizing again regularly.  This will ensure that the dead layer of skin won't build up and prevent the new hair from coming through.  When the new hair can't get through the layer of dead skin it can cause ingrown hairs and bumps, which can be itchy and uncomfortable to deal with.  As long as you keep up with your exfoliation and moisturizing your skin shouldn't have any problems at all after waxing, and should always be ready for any future waxes.  Even people who don't wax should keep up with exfoliating and moisturizing their skin simply because it promotes healthy skin, and everyone should want that!!

ASK THE WAXTHETICIAN™: I get waxed at the nail salon; why should I come to Waxuality?

Although some nail technicians are good at waxing, their license doesn't allow waxing. That is the number one reason that you shouldn't continue to go to them.  Nail technicians are not professionally or legally trained in hair removal or skin care.  They are operating outside of their scope of practice. Secondly, double dipping (using the same stick to apply wax) runs rampant in nail salons.  In the interest of cutting cost, they are spreading bacteria from one client to another.  You may have heard them say that the wax gets hot enough to kill bacteria however, to reach that temperature, wax would burn the client's skin. Improper procedure and techniques can cause redness, scarring, ingrown hairs, bumps, and worst of all. . .infection.  Waxuality is a body waxing salon that specializes in hair removal. Not only are we aware of the science of the skin and the proper way to remove hair, we are also all Licensed Estheticians. Most importantly, under no circumstances do we ever, ever double dip! Hope to see you soon : )

MELISSA: WAXTHETICIAN™

There are so many places that offer waxing services nowadays however, here are a few differences between Waxuality and those other places that you should know.  At Waxuality, we are all licensed Estheticians who have been extensively trained and educated on skincare and skincare services, including body waxing.  As estheticians, we have chosen to specialize in body waxing and how to perfect our technique in order to provide our clients with the best possible waxing experience that we can. When you go to a nail salon, most of the time they have no training or experience in body waxing.  Waxing is not what they concentrate on being the best at.  That alone can result in a service that is uncomfortable and unsanitary.  Most nail salons double dip their sticks into the wax, contaminating it and making it unhealthy and unclean for the next client to have used on them.   Consequently, it can turn out to be a painful and regrettable experience.

At Waxuality we never, ever double dip!  We use only disposable supplies, such as disposable sticks, bed coverings, pillowcases, and more.  We listen to what our clients ask for and do the best we can in order to make sure that we give them exactly that. There are also hair salons and day spas that offer waxing services, but again, they aren't specializing in waxing which leads to tainted experiences and higher pricing.  At Waxuality, our aim is to be the best at body waxing and to also be affordable, so that all kinds of people can try waxing and actually keep doing it regularly as part of their grooming regimen.  You wouldn't go to a waxing salon to get your nails done, would you?  We don’t know how to do nails and we’d only be practicing on you.   In that same context, why go to a nail salon to get your waxing done? I can promise that if you give Waxuality a try, you will never go to a nail salon or expensive spa again for waxing.  When you see for yourself what it's like to have a waxing service done by a licensed professional that specializes in it, you won't let yourself or the people you care about settle for anything less!!

ASK THE WAXTHETICIAN™: Why is waxing better than shaving?

Ask the Waxthetician is an ongoing series of questions that our customers ask.  If our fabulous customers are pondering these questions, maybe you are too.

Lashaye: Waxthetician

Shaving has long been a part of almost every woman's feminine routine.  Whether it's once a week, twice a week, or every other week, most of us have experienced it at one time or another.  With results such as fast regrowth, thicker and sharper ingrown hair, let's not forget the razor burns. . . I could go on and on about the perils of shaving but why when there is a safer and better alternative like waxing.  Waxing reduces hair growth, hair grows in finer, there are no dark spots, or razor burns.  Most importantly, the results lasts for four to six weeks.  How?  Well, when you wax, the hair is pulled from the root.  The follicle is being damaged each time, which makes the hair grow in weaker.  With a few appointments, you'll definitely see a difference.  Over time there will be little to no hair.  So, if you're tired of redness, itchiness, or cuts that leave the skin raw, try waxing and experience smoother and healthier looking skin to the eye and touch.

Melissa: Waxthetician

In my opinion, waxing is the better option for hair removal than shaving. When you shave you are cutting the hair off at the surface of the skin, which means that the hair comes back in a day or so.  Shaving also gives the hair growing back in a blunt end making the individual hairs look thicker, which in turn also makes it look like you have more hair than you actually do.  When the hair grows back from shaving, many people will experience itchiness and discomfort because that blunt end left on the hair that was just shaved will catch on the inside edge of your pore and cause bumps and itchiness.  Razors also harbor all sorts of bacteria which is not good for your skin, and can cause rashes and other problems because the bacteria on the razor gets pushed down into the pores when you drag it across the surface of your skin.  With waxing, these problems don't occur.  When you wax you're pulling the hair out by the root, follicle and all. While the first time can hurt a lit bit, the waxes afterwards are much more comfortable.  Your follicle can sit inside your pore and grow hair for somewhere between 3 and 5 years, which means that the follicles coming out on the first wax are a bit larger than the follicles coming out of your pores during subsequent waxes.  That also means that the hair coming back is finer and the hair growth is less dense than before your wax. Hair also can take up to 4 weeks to grow back which is very convenient to having to shave almost every day, which can save you a lot of time.  As you wax, your skin is exfoliated and is left looking healthy as well which is an added bonus.  Keeping up with exfoliation at home is important so that ingrown hairs don't occur.  Also, when the hair grows back from waxing the end of each hair is round, and there is really no itching or discomfort at all when the hair is coming back in.  Just keep up with your exfoliating while you are in the shower, which is great for your skin and something we should all be doing anyway.  As a result, your skin will look beautiful and hair free for weeks. If you ask me, waxing is definitely the better alternative to shaving, in my professional opinion, and I believe that everyone should give it a try to experience the benefits for themselves.
